Running a household takes an incredible amount of skill! Seriously, when women who have previously been stay-at-home moms go back into the workforce, their resumes ought to go to the top of the pile! There is no other position on Earth that requires someone to be competent and skilled at so many different things!
Of course, we learn as we go. My grandmother had ten children. One time I made the comment that I didn’t know how someone could handle that, to which she replied, “They all came one at a time!” She learned as she lived and I’m guessing she had household responsibilities down to a science by the time that tenth child came around!
I have yet to get everything down to a science! Household tasks are…not motivating. I am far too comfortable in a mess! I have friends who cannot stand a messy house so much so that they don’t allow their children to have toys, Play-Doh, marbles, or anything…fun! On the other hand, there are moms like me who play with Play-Doh right along with my kids; have family paint night; help my kids with creating their “garbage robots;” among many other things, but would be mortified if a friend stopped over, unannounced!
There are definitely tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way. I have friends who [at least seem to] have this down! Not to mention the fact that my mom had a lot of it figured out! She has much experience in managing a household. I’m hoping that by the time my youngest child graduates, I’ll have it down to a science!
So, from chore charts, to expectations, to allowances and teaching our kids to do laundry, manage money, cook, and other life skills, I hope that I’ll be able to share the process that works for me with you so that it doesn’t take you as long to figure it out as it has for me!
